Many women experience cravings in the evening during their periods, but the snacks they choose can greatly influence their comfort. Sujatha Stephen, the chief dietician at Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, emphasizes that opting for the right kinds of snacks can help alleviate symptoms such as cramps and bloating. Hormonal fluctuations often lead to significant cravings, making it essential to select nutritious options instead of unhealthy snacks that could exacerbate discomfort.
“Cravings in the evening are normal,” Sujatha points out. “They’re tied to hormonal shifts during menstruation and are not merely emotional impulses.” She stresses that recognizing which foods can alleviate discomfort and which may intensify it is vital for a more comfortable menstrual experience. Certain snacks can elevate mood, aid digestion, and provide sustained energy, while others high in sugar or unhealthy fats can lead to increased bloating and fatigue.
Sujatha recommends wholesome, quick-to-make snacks suitable for the evening that do not invoke guilt. For instance, pairing a banana with peanut butter offers natural sweetness, fiber, and magnesium—elements that help ease cramps. Roasted chickpeas serve as a protein-dense option that promotes satiety and steady energy levels. A mix of fresh fruits and nuts provides vital nutrients and fiber that help digestion. Yogurt with chia or flax seeds enhances gut health and reduces bloating, while veggie sticks with hummus deliver a satisfying crunch along with fiber and protein.
According to her, choosing these snacks not only combats physical symptoms but also boosts mood and overall wellness. “Women often feel drained or low during their periods; the right foods can energize them and promote better digestion, making evening time more pleasant,” she elaborates. Sujatha also notes that pre-planning healthy evening snacks can help avoid processed foods that contribute to cramps and fatigue.
It's important not to disregard period cravings as simple indulgences. Instead, addressing these cravings with nutrient-dense snacks can enhance comfort during menstruation. By incorporating foods rich in magnesium, fiber, protein, and essential vitamins, women can feel better, lessen discomfort, and maintain their energy levels even on particularly tiring days. By planning thoughtfully, evening snacking can transform into a nourishing aspect of self-care, rather than a cause for guilt or anxiety.
Choosing nutrient-rich snacks during periods aligns with the body's needs while also ensuring satisfaction. Simple yet nutritious options like fruits, nuts, yogurt, and legumes can significantly enhance comfort and vitality, helping women stay energized throughout their menstrual cycles. Following these expert suggestions allows for more effective management of cravings and nutritional needs without sacrificing taste or enjoyment.
