In a captivating clash, Ole Miss triumphed over third-ranked Georgia with a score of 39-34 in the College Football Playoff (CFP) quarterfinal held at the Sugar Bowl. The victory was propelled by stellar performances from quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and kicker Lucas Carneiro.
Chambliss amassed 362 passing yards and threw for two crucial touchdowns, showcasing exceptional play during vital moments. Lucas Carneiro capped off the victory with a game-winning 47-yard field goal as time ran out. This win marks Ole Miss's second postseason achievement following the promotion of defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach after Lane Kiffin's exit to LSU on November 30.
Reflecting on the team's perseverance, Chambliss stated, “People doubted us before the season and even after our coach left. We just want to play ball and have fun, and that’s showing now.” Golding praised his players for their mental strength, emphasizing their focus amid challenges.
Georgia, seeded No. 3, battled valiantly under coach Kirby Smart, who described the matchup as an “incredible college football game,” showcasing the competitive essence of the CFP. Despite trailing 34-24 in the closing moments, Georgia made a valiant effort to equalize before Carneiro's decisive kick.
Among the key plays was Chambliss's pivotal 40-yard pass to De'Zhaun Stribling during a crucial third down, setting up the final kick. The game also featured a safety awarded to Ole Miss after Georgia's last kickoff attempt.
Both quarterbacks displayed remarkable composure. Chambliss repeatedly evaded pressure to sustain drives, while Georgia's Gunner Stockton secured two fourth-down conversions and rushed for two touchdowns, enduring significant hits.
Ole Miss outperformed Georgia in yardage, with a total of 473 compared to Georgia's 343 yards. Harrison Wallace III led with 156 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Kewan Lacy recorded 98 rushing yards and two scores.
With this victory, Ole Miss progresses to the CFP semifinals, where they will face Miami at the Fiesta Bowl, continuing their remarkable postseason journey under Golding’s guidance.
