Omaha Woman Achieves Milestone Despite Severe Neurological Disorder

In a remarkable display of resilience, Alex Simpson, a 20-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, has reached her milestone birthday against all odds, born with hydranencephaly, a rare and dire neurological condition. Initially, doctors had informed her parents that she would not survive beyond the age of four.

Alex's brain development is severely compromised, with most of her brain's hemispheres absent, replaced instead by cerebrospinal fluid. Typically, hydranencephaly leads to fatality within the first year, making Alex's survival an extraordinary exception. Her father, Shawn, shared, "She technically has about half the size of my pinky finger for her cerebellum, and that's essentially it."

Although unable to see or hear, Alex's family believes she perceives their emotions. Her 14-year-old brother, SJ, expressed, "She senses when someone is in pain or stressed. It’s astonishing how she engages with those around her."

Shawn and his wife, Lorena, attribute Alex’s surprising journey to their deep love and unwavering faith. "Twenty years ago, we were terrified, but our faith has guided us forward," said Shawn. On November 4, Alex celebrated her 20th birthday surrounded by loved ones, reaching a milestone her doctors deemed unattainable.

Hydranencephaly affects approximately 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 10,000 pregnancies and arises from significant damage to the developing brain, often due to infection, stroke, or trauma during pregnancy. While there is no known cure, some supportive care measures can extend life for select cases.

Alex's life is a powerful reminder of the strength of love, perseverance, and hope, exemplifying that medical forecasts are not definitive.
