In a significant policy shift, Ontario Premier Doug Ford has revealed plans to sell a recently acquired private jet, valued at $28.9 million, after enduring substantial public backlash. The aircraft was initially intended to facilitate Ford's official travels, but it quickly became the center of controversy.
Ford acknowledged in a public address that, although the jet was purchased with positive intentions, he agrees that “now is not the right time” for this costly asset. He confirmed that the province is already collaborating with Bombardier, the plane's manufacturer, to expedite the sale process.
The jet, a used 2016 Bombardier Challenger 650, was supposed to ensure secure, flexible, and consistent travel for the premier across Canada and the United States. Officials argued that this would enhance the efficiency of meeting business and political figures, particularly in discussions related to trade concerns such as tariffs.
However, the acquisition faced fierce criticism from opposition leaders and the public alike, who questioned the necessity of such an extravagant expense, suggesting that taxpayer dollars should prioritize critical public services over lavish travel expenses.
Key opposition figures expressed strong dissatisfaction with the change of plan. Marit Stiles criticized Ford for reversing course only after intense public pressure. John Fraser charged Ford with leading an extravagant lifestyle funded by taxpayers, while Mike Schreiner raised concerns regarding potential financial losses in recovering the jet's full value during the sale.
Critics and financial experts have highlighted that a quick sale might lead to diminished returns. Given the current controversy surrounding the jet, likely buyers may seek lower prices, placing an additional burden on taxpayers.
Despite this setback, Ford stated his ongoing commitment to fostering relationships with leaders across Canada and the U.S. with the goal of attracting investment, generating employment, and supporting the provincial economy. He reiterated the government's dedication to responsible fiscal management and addressing public concerns.
This incident underscores the necessity of public accountability in government financial decisions and illustrates how swiftly public sentiment can impact important policy changes, particularly those involving significant expenditures.
