Papua New Guinea – A moderate 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre was located about 127 kilometres west of Kokopo, a coastal city in the eastern part of the country, at a depth of 68.2 kilometres.
Papua New Guinea sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly active seismic zone that contains around 90 percent of the world’s active volcanoes. The region frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the shifting of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.
Although there are no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, residents in nearby areas reported feeling tremors. Authorities have urged people to stay alert, particularly those living near fault lines and volcanic regions.
Experts say that earthquakes in Papua New Guinea are common, ranging from minor tremors to more significant seismic events. The depth and magnitude of Tuesday’s quake suggest that the shaking would be noticeable locally, but the risk of widespread destruction is low.
Seismologists continue to monitor the area closely, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and safety measures in earthquake-prone regions like Papua New Guinea. Residents are advised to follow local updates and maintain emergency plans in case of future seismic activity.
