Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, has emphasized to fans and critics alike that they should not underestimate India's once-leading duo, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, following the team's seven-wicket setback against Australia in the opening ODI in Perth. Despite the challenging start, Ponting has confidence in both players' abilities and experience as they prepare for the upcoming 2027 World Cup.
The series moves to Adelaide on Thursday and finishes in Sydney on Saturday. Ponting pointed out that Adelaide's conditions present a prime opportunity for batting, though the pair will be up against some of the finest white-ball bowlers, setting the stage for a competitive atmosphere.
Having transitioned to exclusively playing in the 50-over format since their Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, both Kohli and Rohit faced difficulty against Australia. Rohit fell early courtesy of Josh Hazlewood, while Kohli was dismissed for a duck by Mitchell Starc. Nonetheless, Ponting insisted their skills and proven track record should not be ignored.
Ponting expressed optimism that form would return swiftly for both players, stating, “You don’t ever write off champion players.” He highlighted Kohli's status as one of the best in ODI history and affirmed that they would find ways to contribute, likely ensuring their position for the 2027 World Cup.
Ravi Shastri, a former India coach, also praised Kohli and Rohit for their substantial impact on Indian cricket over the years. He remarked that their legacy is already established, alleviating concerns about their performance going forward. Shastri underscored that their long-standing reputation in both India and globally is founded on years of steady excellence.
This coming match in Adelaide will challenge their adaptability. Ponting is convinced that facing the strong Australian bowling lineup will offer both Kohli and Rohit an essential chance to showcase their ability, resilience, and leadership.
Though they recently faced a setback, both Ponting and Shastri concur that Kohli and Rohit continue to be pivotal in India's ODI lineup. Their experience, skills, and leadership are crucial for steering the team towards victory in the present series and beyond, reiterating that true champions can always bounce back after tough performances.
