Portugal is embarking on a historic technological investment, with telecom operators set to allocate €4.2 billion over the next five years for the expansion of high-speed 5G networks, extensive fibre-optic coverage, and satellite services. This bold initiative aims to boost connectivity in urban areas, countryside, and essential transport infrastructure including roads, ports, railways, and airports.
The nation’s leading telecom firms—Altice, NOS, and Vodafone—dominate the market, collectively managing over 90% of it and driving these ventures. In addition to mobile networks, emphasis is placed on seamlessly integrating advanced technologies to bolster data centres, artificial intelligence projects, and other high-tech innovations.
Spotlighting Portugal’s pivotal role in global digital infrastructure, Microsoft has recently declared a $10 billion investment in its Start Campus data centre located in Sines. This project will utilize renewable energy sources to fuel sophisticated AI computing, reinforcing the country’s pledge to sustainable, high-tech advancements.
Moreover, Portugal’s expansive Atlantic coastline enhances its position as a vital hub for subsea internet cables that connect Europe, Africa, and the Americas. This fortifies its critical role in global connectivity and unveils new avenues for digital innovation and economic growth.
Experts point out that these concentrated investments in 5G and fibre will not only enhance internet access for residents but also draw international tech initiatives, establishing Portugal as a prime locale for digital and AI-centric enterprises. Through this plan, Portugal is poised to redefine its digital framework, merging speed, sustainability, and global connectivity.
