Portugal’s soccer team celebrated winning the UEFA Nations League after beating Spain in the final match at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on June 8, 2025.

Cristiano Ronaldo lifted the trophy as the crowd sang "We Are The Champions." The game ended 2-2 after extra time, and Portugal won 5-3 in the penalty shootout.

Portugal’s goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, saved Spain’s Alvaro Morata’s penalty shot. Then, Ruben Neves scored the final penalty to win the game for Portugal.

Morata was the only player who missed a penalty and looked very sad after the game.

Ronaldo scored an important goal in the 61st minute to tie the game 1-1. Earlier, Mikel Oyarzabal had scored for Spain just before halftime. The match stayed 2-2 after 120 minutes.

Oyarzabal said it was hard to lose but they would try to win again soon. Spain, the current European champions, didn’t play as well as they did in their last game where they scored five goals against France.

The first goal of the match was lucky for Spain when Martin Zubimendi scored after a cross from Lamine Yamal. Portugal’s Nuno Mendes quickly scored to make it 1-1.

Mendes was the best player in the game. He helped Ronaldo score by making a good pass and also scored his own penalty.

Ronaldo was very tired and left the field before the end. He got a big cheer and a hug from his coach Roberto Martinez. Earlier in the tournament, Ronaldo helped Portugal beat Germany for the first time in 25 years.

Some Portugal players, including Mendes and his Paris Saint-Germain teammates Goncalo Ramos, Joao Neves, and Vitinha, won two trophies in about a week since they also won the UEFA Champions League in the same stadium.

Earlier that day, France beat Germany 2-0 to take third place. Kylian Mbappe scored his 50th goal for France and helped with another goal.

France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, said the team didn’t care much about this game because there was not much to win. France was also missing some important players because of injuries.
