Prabowo unveils pro-labor policies on May Day

Prabowo unveils pro-labor policies on May Day

Post by : Shakul

Prabowo Subianto announced several major pro labor measures during a large Labor Day event held at the National Monument complex in Jakarta on May 2, 2026. The event brought together thousands of workers, farmers, and fishermen, showing strong public participation and support.

This marked the second time that President Prabowo attended a May Day celebration since taking office in October 2024. His presence at the event reflects his growing engagement with labor unions and working communities across the country.

During his speech, the President emphasized his commitment to improving the welfare of workers. He stated that his government would continue to prioritize policies that support laborers, farmers, and fishermen, whom he credited for helping him rise to power.

Prabowo also announced the creation of a special task force aimed at preventing and managing mass layoffs. This initiative is expected to provide better job security and protect workers during economic challenges or business downturns.

Another important announcement included plans to increase income shares for ride hailing drivers. This move is intended to ensure fair earnings and improve financial stability for workers in the growing gig economy sector.

The government also plans to speed up the construction of at least one million affordable housing units for workers. This initiative aims to address housing challenges faced by low and middle income workers in urban areas.

After delivering his speech, the President joined labor leaders in a symbolic act of unity. He raised his fist and participated in singing a well known labor movement song, showing solidarity with workers and their struggles.

However, some analysts have raised concerns about the growing closeness between the government and labor unions. They believe that while these policies may strengthen political support, they could also affect the independence of labor movements in the long term.

Overall, the announcements made during the Labor Day event highlight the government’s focus on worker welfare and social support. These measures are expected to have a significant impact on labor policies and economic conditions in Indonesia.
