Priyanka Chopra Hails Zohran Mamdani’s Landmark Win as New York City Mayor

Priyanka Chopra Hails Zohran Mamdani’s Landmark Win as New York City Mayor

Post by : Meena Ariff

Actor Priyanka Chopra, who lives in New York City with her husband Nick Jonas and their daughter Malti Marie, turned to Instagram to recognise a notable moment in the city's politics. Zohran Mamdani has been elected New York City's 111th mayor, becoming the youngest officeholder and the first Muslim to assume the role at 34 years old.

In an Instagram Story Chopra shared a screenshot of Mamdani speaking to supporters following his victory, offering her congratulations to him and to filmmaker Mira Nair. Zohran is the son of acclaimed director Mira Nair and Ugandan-Indian academic Mahmood Mamdani.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani's family later lived in Cape Town before settling in New York. He is an alumnus of The Bronx High School of Science and earned a degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. Prior to becoming mayor, he served as a member of the New York State Assembly, building a career in public service.

Chopra has been based in New York since 2016, when she began filming her US television debut, Quantico. Her time in the city coincided with her relationship with singer-actor Nick Jonas; the couple became engaged in Crete in July 2018 and married in a multi-day ceremony at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur that blended Christian and Hindu traditions. Chopra has frequently spoken about how their apartment and its skyline views provide calm and creative inspiration, especially at sunset.

Mamdani's victory is being viewed as a significant shift in New York's political scene, reflecting its diversity and the rise of younger leadership. Chopra's public acknowledgement highlights how international figures can draw attention to important civic milestones in their adopted cities.
