Qatar's Peace Initiative Wins Endorsement at IPU Assembly in Istanbul

Qatar's Peace Initiative Wins Endorsement at IPU Assembly in Istanbul

Post by : Badri Ariffin

During the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Istanbul, Turkey, a pivotal resolution spearheaded by Qatar along with several allied nations received unanimous support from member parliaments.

This resolution stressed the critical importance of coordinated parliamentary efforts to negotiate ceasefire agreements and to advance peace in regions including the Middle East. It underscores the expanding role of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering global stability.

Endorsed by Qatar’s Shura Council, the proposal was notably included in the Assembly’s agenda—a landmark achievement as it marks the first instance of an emergency item from an Arab nation being discussed at the IPU General Assembly.

The delegation from Qatar was headed by Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, who played an active role in discussions around the theme, “Promoting hope, preserving peace, and ensuring justice for future generations.”

In a session of the Governing Council, Deputy Speaker Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti showcased Qatar’s commitment to global development and reflected on a parliamentary forum held in Doha during the Second World Summit for Social Development that focused on investment in human resources and institutional roles in social advancement.

She also addressed pressing matters such as enhancing the IPU’s operational structure, tackling digital violence, and combating misinformation affecting women in politics. Dr. Al Sulaiti emphasized the vital need for robust laws to safeguard women and promote secure political engagement.

Delegation members from Qatar participated in numerous standing committee meetings, engaging in discussions on democracy, human rights, UN affairs, and sustainable growth, further reinforcing the pivotal role parliaments play in meeting global issues.

The concluding “Istanbul Declaration” underlined the significance of youth participation in decision-making processes, women’s empowerment, and the ethical use of modern technologies like artificial intelligence. It advocated for enhanced international collaboration to translate commitments into actionable legislative initiatives.

Overall, the Assembly highlighted the essential roles of unity, dialogue, and parliamentary collaboration in fostering enduring peace across the globe.
