20 Injured in Explosion at Quetta Railway Station

20 Injured in Explosion at Quetta Railway Station

Post by : Shweta

In Quetta, Balochistan, a significant explosion near the Chaman Phatak railway station resulted in injuries to at least 20 individuals. The blast, which occurred as a train was traversing the tracks, caused extensive damage to the vicinity, including train coaches, vehicles, and surrounding structures. Emergency services and security personnel responded rapidly to the scene, conducting rescue operations that lasted several hours.

Local law enforcement reported that the explosion struck while the train was operating in the area, partially damaging it and leading to the derailment of multiple coaches, including the main locomotive. Eyewitness accounts indicated that two coaches overturned due to the explosion's force. Additionally, numerous buildings nearby suffered shattered windows and debris, while about ten parked vehicles were also affected.

In response to the incident, an emergency was declared at major medical facilities across Quetta. Medical personnel were mobilized to attend to the injured civilians and train passengers transported from the blast location, with some victims reported to be in critical condition requiring immediate intervention.

As a precaution following the blast, officials halted the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express at the Quetta station. Security teams cordoned off the area to investigate potential explosives or further threats, involving bomb disposal units and forensic specialists to analyze the site and gather evidence.

Initial reports indicated the possibility of the explosion being a suicide attack aimed at a train accommodating security personnel and their families. The militant faction Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) subsequently claimed responsibility for the incident, although authorities are still in the process of confirming details. Officials emphasized that the attack seemed designed to disrupt railway infrastructure and hinder security movements within the region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the act, labeling it as a despicable attack of terrorism, and reiterated that such incidents would not deter Pakistan's resolve against extremist threats. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his sympathies for the victims, instructing officials to guarantee comprehensive medical care for those injured.

Balochistan has increasingly seen militant actions, with separatists often targeting railroads, security agencies, and governmental establishments. Security analysts note that these assaults are amplifying the challenges faced by Pakistan's security forces, especially near its borders with Afghanistan and Iran. The recent explosion has further intensified concerns regarding public safety and the protection of railway services in this volatile area.
