Residents in Ningbo, a major port city in eastern China's Zhejiang Province, witnessed a rare weather event on Monday afternoon (July 20) when a thin, tornado-like cloud formed in the sky, drawing the attention of people across the city. Videos and photographs of the unusual cloud quickly spread on social media as many onlookers stopped to capture the spectacle.

According to local authorities, the formation was identified as a funnel cloud, a rotating column of air extending downward from a thunderstorm cloud. Although funnel clouds often resemble tornadoes, they are not classified as tornadoes unless they make contact with the ground.

Cloud lasted several minutes before disappearing

Officials said the funnel cloud remained visible for several minutes before gradually dissipating. Weather experts confirmed that the cloud never touched the ground and therefore did not develop into a tornado.

Authorities also reported that no injuries, property damage, or disruptions were recorded during the event.

No threat reported

Officials have confirmed that the weather phenomenon posed no immediate threat to residents. The incident serves as a reminder of the dynamic nature of summer weather, particularly during periods of atmospheric instability.

Local weather authorities continue to monitor conditions, but no further severe weather warnings have been issued in connection with the funnel cloud.
