This week marked the conclusion of the Dubai International Aquatics Championships 2026 at the Hamdan Sports Complex, further establishing the city’s reputation as a premier venue for elite swimming competitions and crucial qualification events for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
Jointly organized by the UAE Swimming Federation and Dubai Sports Council, the four-day event—approved by World Aquatics—welcomed over 1,600 competitors from 100 countries. Athletes representing more than 80 international clubs and academies showcased their talents in nearly 200 events, elevating the standards of global swimming.
Outstanding Achievements Steal the Spotlight
The championship was marked by remarkable achievements, including the setting of 10 new tournament records. A standout moment for host UAE was swimmer Hamad Al Shehhi breaking the national record in the 50-meter freestyle, earning enthusiastic cheers from local supporters.
This championship was not only about medals; it also served as an official qualifier, with internationally recognized timings enabling young athletes to pursue Olympic dreams and other major global competitions.
Event Scale Enhancing Talent Growth
The extensive nature of the championship was highlighted by the distribution of more than 4,000 medals and substantial cash prizes to support athletes' journeys from amateur to professional levels.
Officials noted that the tournament has grown into a global stage for spotting talent, giving athletes vital exposure and competitive experience.

The triumph of the 2026 edition underscores Dubai’s strategic goal to become a center for global sporting events. Bolstered by advanced infrastructure and elite competition standards, the city is increasingly aligning regional talent with international prospects.
