South Africa’s tailenders provided significant support against Pakistan, with spinners Senuran Muthusamy and Keshav Maharaj forming a vital fifty-run partnership. With the score at 235 for 8 and trailing by 98 runs, they aggressively took on the Pakistani bowlers, ensuring the contest remained compelling.
Pakistan dominated early on, taking four wickets for only 50 runs in the first session. Debutant Asif Afridi put on a stellar display, achieving his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Bowling with precision on a deteriorating pitch, he consistently troubled the South African batsmen, although Pakistan squandered chances, dropping three catches and missing a stumping.
Tristan Stubbs and Kyle Verreynne, South Africa’s remaining recognized batsmen, fell quickly. Verreynne edged a delivery from Asif to the wicketkeeper, while Stubbs, who had 68 runs overnight, managed just eight more before being LBW to Asif. Simon Harmer followed shortly after, making Asif Afridi the oldest debutant at 38 years and 299 days to claim a five-wicket haul.
Senuran Muthusamy, who remained at the crease from the start, showed poise and talent. He batted aggressively after the top order fell, executing sweeps and dominating strokes. Despite being dismissed LBW by Sajid Khan and successfully reviewing the decision for a confirmed inside-edge, he continued his innings for South Africa.
When Pakistan took the second new ball, they hoped for swing from Shaheen Shah Afridi; however, Marco Jansen made the most of the pace, driving through mid-off. Asif Afridi's spell concluded after 19 overs, and Noman Ali soon joined him, claiming his first wicket by trapping Jansen LBW upon review. Muthusamy and Maharaj persevered, taking bold risks to add vital runs.
The aggressive collaboration between Muthusamy and Maharaj leveraged Pakistan's dropped catches and missed stumping chances. Maharaj particularly troubled Noman Ali, while Muthusamy aimed aggressively at Sajid Khan. Their fearless batting allowed South Africa to remain competitive and hindered Pakistan's attempt to build a substantial lead.
This resilient effort from the lower order has subtly shifted the momentum in South Africa’s favor. With a reduction in Pakistan's first-innings lead and a display of bold yet strategic batting, Muthusamy and Maharaj have ensured the Test remains finely balanced and fiercely competitive.
