A Richard Mille timepiece, estimated between €700,000 and €1 million, was reported stolen from a hotel guest during the ongoing Cannes Film Festival in France, as per a police source cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The incident occurred at the Palm Beach hotel on Boulevard de la Croisette, a vibrant hub during the annual event. The area was bustling with festival-goers when the theft happened.
Reports indicate that the watch was taken amidst a crowded restroom area near the hotel. Authorities suspect that the thieves capitalized on the chaos, blending in with the throng to avoid raising suspicion.
The watch belonged to the prestigious Richard Mille brand, renowned globally for crafting some of the most luxurious timepieces favored by celebrities, athletes, and affluent collectors.
Cannes authorities have long dealt with organized theft syndicates during the festival period. High-end items like watches and jewelry are often targeted as high-profile visitors flock to the French Riviera annually.
Last year, French prosecutors documented over 12 incidents of theft or attempted theft involving luxury watches in Cannes within a two-month timeframe.
Investigators note that various international criminal networks employ sophisticated strategies to resell stolen luxury watches. These include altering serial numbers and fabricating false credentials to reintroduce the items into global markets at inflated prices.
The Cannes Film Festival draws a diverse array of celebrities, business leaders, and affluent tourists from all corners of the globe each year. In response to recurrent theft events, local authorities typically amplify security measures throughout Cannes to safeguard attendees and deter luxury crimes during the gala.
