Romania Reports Russian Drone Strike on Apartment Building, Two Injured

Romania Reports Russian Drone Strike on Apartment Building, Two Injured

Post by : Shweta

Authorities in Romania have reported that a Russian drone struck a residential apartment complex in Galați, injuring two people and prompting urgent responses from NATO and European leaders. This incident occurred during a significant overnight drone assault by Russia targeting infrastructure in Ukraine, particularly around the Danube River area.

The drone breached Romanian airspace, crashing into a ten-story apartment building located near the Ukrainian border. The impact set off a fire on the rooftop, necessitating the evacuation of numerous residents by emergency services. Local officials confirmed that a woman and child sustained minor injuries and were hospitalized for care.

Romania's Defence Ministry disclosed that their radar systems monitored the drone's entry as it crossed into their airspace during Russian strikes on Ukraine. In response to the airspace incursion, the Romanian military quickly deployed two F-16 jets and a helicopter. Emergency warnings were also dispatched to residents in nearby areas. However, due to the drone's low altitude, interception efforts were hampered, leading to the building's strike.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan denounced the event, labeling it one of the gravest security incidents on Romanian land since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. Following the strike, the Romanian government summoned the Russian ambassador and held emergency defense discussions, denouncing the drone's incursion as a significant breach of international law and sovereignty.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also voiced strong concerns, affirming the alliance's readiness to defend all member territories. EU leaders condemned Russia's actions, highlighting that such assaults on NATO's borders heighten the risk of broader regional instability. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated Russia had "crossed another line" when civilians were harmed within NATO territory.

This incident marks not the first Russian drone or debris intrusion into Romanian territory during the ongoing conflict. Romanian officials have noted several airspace incursions over the past years amid Russian offensives on Ukrainian ports nearby. However, this recent drone strike is particularly alarming due to civilian injuries caused by the blast in a populated area.

Galați is situated near the borders of Ukraine and Moldova, making it increasingly sensitive due to ongoing military activities related to the conflict. Analysts believe this incident could compel NATO to bolster air defense measures throughout Eastern Europe, as well as intensify pressure on Russia regarding border security.

While Russia has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, Romanian officials connected the drone to a significant Russian offensive aimed at Ukraine overnight. The event has reignited fears in Europe about the potential for the Ukraine war to extend into NATO territory should such aggressions persist.
