Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy strongly condemned a Russian drone strike on a railway station in Shostka, located in the northeastern Sumy region, on Saturday. He described the attack as “savage” and said it deliberately targeted civilians.
The drone strike hit a passenger train bound for Kyiv, causing injuries and casualties among both passengers and railway staff, according to Sumy regional governor Oleh Hryhorov. A photo shared on social media showed a passenger carriage engulfed in flames, while emergency teams worked to rescue victims and provide medical aid.
Although the exact number of casualties is still being confirmed, at least 30 victims have been reported so far. Zelenskiy emphasized that Russia must be held accountable for targeting civilians and called for stronger international action.
“The Russians could not have been unaware that they were striking civilians. This is terror the world cannot ignore,” Zelenskiy said. He urged Europe and the United States to move beyond statements of support and take concrete steps to stop further attacks. “Every day Russia takes people’s lives. Only strength can make them stop,” he added.
The strike comes amid an intensifying Russian campaign targeting Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, which has seen nearly daily attacks in recent months.
