A Russian drone strike hit a railway station in Shostka, Sumy region, northeastern Ukraine on Saturday, injuring at least 30 people, including passengers and railway staff, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed.
Describing the attack as "savage," Zelensky shared footage showing a train carriage badly damaged, with flames, twisted metal, and shattered windows. He emphasized that the strike deliberately targeted civilians and called for stronger international action against Moscow.
The Shostka station is located about 50 kilometers from the Russian border. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian army has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s railway infrastructure, disrupting transportation and civilian life.
In related developments, overnight Russian strikes in the northern Chernihiv region cut power to roughly 50,000 households. Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces reported targeting a major oil refinery in Russia’s northwestern Leningrad region, signaling Kyiv’s intent to escalate its long-range drone attacks on Russian energy facilities in response to repeated attacks on Ukrainian cities and the power grid.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions as Ukraine continues to defend its infrastructure while Russia maintains its campaign of strikes across the country.
