Russian Drone Strike Kills One in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia

Russian Drone Strike Kills One in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia

Post by : Shakul

A Russian drone strike on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia killed one person and injured seven others early Wednesday, according to Ukrainian emergency authorities. The attack caused major damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure while rescue teams worked under the constant threat of additional strikes.

Officials said a large fire broke out in a three-storey residential building covering nearly 800 square metres. Emergency crews were forced to pause operations several times and seek shelter due to fears of further attacks before eventually bringing the blaze under control.

Zaporizhzhia Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov stated that Russia launched at least five strikes on the city. Several neighborhoods suffered damage, while parts of Zaporizhzhia National University were also reportedly affected during the assault.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, Russian attacks targeted the Sumy region, where a riding school was hit and several animals were killed. Ukrainian authorities said Russia launched 119 drones overnight, with air defence systems intercepting 97 of them. However, some drones successfully struck multiple locations across the country.

The attacks came as leaders attending the G7 Summit in France reaffirmed their support for Ukraine. In a joint statement, G7 nations pledged continued military assistance, including air defence systems and additional security support to help Ukraine defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Meanwhile, religious and political leaders condemned a separate Russian attack that damaged the historic Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex. A drone strike reportedly ignited a fire on the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, one of Ukraine’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attacks as deliberate acts against both civilians and cultural heritage. He called on international partners to increase pressure on Russia and strengthen support for Ukraine as the conflict continues to impact cities and communities across the country.
