SAG Awards 2026: Top Film and TV Nominations Set Stage for Oscars

SAG Awards 2026: Top Film and TV Nominations Set Stage for Oscars

Post by : Meena Ariff

The Screen Actors Guild Awards, which were renamed in January 2025, have announced their nominations for 2026, spotlighting films and TV shows expected to be major contenders for the upcoming Academy Awards. These awards are closely watched as the winners are chosen by SAG-AFTRA members, the largest voting group for the Oscars.

Leading the nominations for Best Movie Cast are two prominent films, which will compete against the Shakespeare-inspired drama Hamnet, the sports-themed movie Marty Supreme, and the Gothic science fiction film Frankenstein.

In the acting categories, Leonardo DiCaprio earned a nomination for his role as Bob in One Battle After Another. Michael B. Jordan was recognized for his impressive dual performance as twin brothers Smoke and Stack Moore in Sinners. Jessie Buckley also received a nomination for portraying Agnes Hathaway in Hamnet. These actors represent some of the strongest contenders this awards season.

For television, the dark comedy series The White Lotus faces competition from the medical drama The Pitt and the psychological thriller Severance. The culinary comedy The Bear is also nominated and will go up against The Studio, Abbott Elementary, and Hacks. The Emmy-winning limited series Adolescence was recognized with several nominations, highlighting its critical success.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for March 1, 2026, and will be streamed live on Netflix, allowing viewers worldwide to watch the announcement of winners.

Last year, the live announcement of nominees was canceled due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, and the nominations were instead revealed online. Sean Astin, President of SAG-AFTRA, took a moment during the nominations announcement to recognize the anniversary of those wildfires and their impact on the community.

The SAG Awards continue to be a significant barometer for Oscar predictions and celebrate excellence in film and television performances.
