Mohammed Shami, the seasoned fast bowler from India, has secured 15 wickets across his initial three matches of the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 season. However, this outstanding achievement has not earned him a spot in the squad selected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the forthcoming matches against South Africa.
Coach's Discontent with Selection Process
Shami's personal coach, Mohammed Badruddin, voiced his dissatisfaction, claiming that the BCCI's decision to exclude Shami was premeditated. Badruddin dismissed fitness-related claims as inadequate excuses, insisting that Shami's excellent performance illustrates his readiness for selection.
“It’s evident they’re overlooking him. He’s fit—taking 15 wickets in two Test matches doesn’t suggest otherwise. The selectors are simply ignoring his talent,” Badruddin commented.
Critique of Selection Methodology
Badruddin condemned the current selection criteria, arguing that decisions seem unduly influenced by T20 statistics instead of genuine performances in domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy. He criticized the rationale behind Shami's exclusion as “totally misguided” and “predetermined.”
Shami's Previous Achievements Underline His Worth
Shami last represented India on March 9, 2025, during the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, where he was tied for second place among wicket-takers with nine in five matches. Despite his notable contributions, he remains excluded from both the India A and senior teams for the series against South Africa.
Coach Optimistic About Shami's Future
While disappointed by this omission, Shami's coach maintains a positive outlook regarding his return to the national squad. Badruddin highlighted that Shami's prowess and past performances in World Cups merit a comeback.
“I believe he’ll return. I am confident he will come back stronger and prove his worth to all,” Badruddin stated.
Shami's prospects may also be boosted in the upcoming IPL 2026 mini-auction after a subdued 2025 season with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, providing him another opportunity to showcase his skills.
