HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, inaugurated the 'Lawh Wa Qalam' museum in Education City on Thursday. This esteemed museum pays tribute to the renowned artist Maqbool Fida Husain, celebrated globally for his dynamic and imaginative works. In her address, HH Sheikha Moza recognized Husain as an iconic figure who bridges cultures, histories, and identities worldwide, underscoring the museum's role in realizing his vision for a space that honors and disseminates his life and artistry to the public.
After the opening, HH Sheikha Moza explored the museum exhibits, which chronicle Husain’s artistic journey. Attendees will encounter themes of spirituality, philosophy, cultural richness, and his Yemeni roots. The museum prominently features his interactions with Arab civilization and his endeavors to foster unity through creative expression. Each section provides insight into his artistic inspiration, enhancing visitors' appreciation of his celebrated works.
The launch event culminated in a formal dinner at the museum’s Seeroo fi al ardh Hall, which now stands as a key attraction. The occasion welcomed HE Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani, along with sheikhs, ministers, international art collectors, and art critics. This gathering showcases Qatar’s expanding influence in the global cultural landscape.
The 'Lawh Wa Qalam' museum features over 150 exhibits, comprising paintings, films, textiles, photographs, and Husain’s personal artifacts, many presented to the public for the first time. A centerpiece is Husain’s concluding masterpiece, “Seeroo fi al ardh,” completed posthumously in 2019 with Qatar Foundation’s support. The museum aims to preserve his artwork while educating visitors about his artistic ideology and cultural influence.
Designed by Husain himself, the museum acts as a cultural and educational hub. It offers a library, creativity section, lecture auditorium, gift shop, and café. These facilities aim to inspire visitors to engage, learn, and create art experientially. The museum welcomes guests from Saturday to Thursday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Friday from 1:30 PM to 7:30 PM. It will be closed on Mondays and public holidays.
The inauguration of 'Lawh Wa Qalam' exemplifies Qatar's dedication to arts and culture, establishing a platform that ignites creativity and promotes dialogue. The museum enriches the understanding of global art through the lens of Maqbool Fida Husain, inviting audiences of all ages to engage with his profound cultural heritage. By celebrating this illustrious artist, Qatar reinforces its status as a global hub for art, culture, and education.
