Former Union Home Minister and senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil Chakurkar passed away on Friday morning at the age of 90. He succumbed to a prolonged illness at his residence in Devvar, Latur, where he had been under medical care. Patil's distinguished career included serving as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and holding multiple key ministerial positions, significantly shaping India’s constitutional and parliamentary framework.
Hailing from Chakur, Latur, Patil was elected to the Lok Sabha seven times representing his constituency. Despite a loss in the 2004 election, he remained a prominent figure as Union Home Minister and continued to contribute through the Rajya Sabha. The Congress party along with its members expressed profound sorrow over his passing and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family.
An esteemed figure in Indian politics, Shivraj Patil earned his Science degree from Osmania University and later pursued Law at Mumbai University. His political journey began with a Lok Sabha victory from Latur in 1980, maintaining his parliamentary role until 1999, during which he earned a reputation as a seasoned leader.
He served in pivotal ministerial roles under Indira and Rajiv Gandhi's governments. From 1991 to 1996, he held the Speaker position of the Lok Sabha and represented India on various international parliamentary platforms. Within the Congress party, he assumed multiple important roles under Sonia Gandhi’s leadership.
Following his 2004 election defeat, the Congress party appointed him as Union Home Minister, a testament to their faith in his abilities. He resigned in 2008 after the Mumbai terrorist attacks, accepting moral responsibility for security failures during his term.
Shivraj Patil's political influence and service to the nation earned him respect across the political spectrum. His leadership, extensive parliamentary experience, and commitment to public service remain a vital chapter in India’s political narrative, establishing him as a venerable statesman and public figure.
