Shreyas Iyer, who lost his central contract with the BCCI just a year ago, has made an impressive comeback, proving his resilience and determination. The 30-year-old middle-order batter returned to domestic cricket in Mumbai, excelling in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which helped rebuild his confidence and earn a spot back in the national team.
Iyer showcased his exceptional form in the ODI series against England, scoring 181 runs in three matches, including two fifties, at an average above 60 and a strike rate over 123. His consistent performance continued at the ICC Champions Trophy, where he amassed 243 runs in five innings with a top score of 79, finishing as India’s second-highest run-scorer.
Domestically, Iyer led the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title, captained Mumbai to Ranji Trophy success, and won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, highlighting his strong presence across formats. He attributes his success to disciplined practice and focusing on challenges. “During the Champions Trophy, I took it ball by ball, gradually built pressure, and focused on helping the team post competitive totals. Repeatedly facing tough bowlers boosted my confidence,” he said.
This year, Iyer has continued his excellent ODI form, scoring 424 runs in eight innings at an average of 53, including four fifties with a strike rate of 93.59. With the upcoming series against Australia starting October 19, he is set to strengthen his position as a key player in India’s white-ball team.
Shreyas Iyer’s journey from setback to success demonstrates the impact of persistence, focus, and self-belief in building a sports career against the odds.
