Siddhant Awasthi Exits Tesla After Eight Years as Cybertruck Leader

Siddhant Awasthi Exits Tesla After Eight Years as Cybertruck Leader

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Tesla has alerted the market to a notable shift in its leadership as Siddhant Awasthi, the programme manager for the Cybertruck and Model 3, has stepped down after an eight-year journey with the company. Awasthi announced his decision via LinkedIn, calling it a “challenging choice,” yet didn’t disclose his future plans.

Starting as an intern, Awasthi swiftly climbed the corporate ladder, playing a crucial role in ramping up the Model 3, contributing to development at Giga Shanghai, and spearheading electronics and wireless architecture projects, eventually guiding the highly anticipated Cybertruck to production. His broad experience encapsulates significant involvement in some of Tesla’s flagship initiatives.

This resignation occurs amid several hurdles for Tesla. The previous month, the company faced a recall of over 63,000 Cybertrucks in the U.S. due to issues with excessively bright front lights, which raised safety concerns. Additionally, early this year, regulators had to recall nearly 46,000 Cybertrucks over dangerous exterior panels near the windshield.

Tesla's recent quarters have also seen profit declines, with a reported 37% drop in earnings for the third quarter of the year, bringing profits down to $1.4 billion from $2.2 billion last year, marking a four-quarter streak of decreasing profitability. Nevertheless, sales grew slightly, largely driven by the urgency to utilize a $7,500 federal EV tax credit before its expiration in October.

Amid these operational and financial trials, CEO Elon Musk gained shareholder backing for a performance-driven stock plan potentially worth $1 trillion, indicating ongoing investor trust despite controversies regarding Musk. Following Awasthi’s announcement, Tesla’s stock experienced a rise of over 2% before the market opened on Monday.

Awasthi's departure leaves a significant legacy of innovation, especially in transforming the futuristic Cybertruck from concept to reality. This moment is crucial for Tesla as it manages recalls, profitability issues, and evolving dynamics within the EV sector.
