Manage Heart Disease Risk with These Six Habits for Type 2 Diabetes

Manage Heart Disease Risk with These Six Habits for Type 2 Diabetes

Post by : Saif Rahman

Individuals with type 2 diabetes face an increased likelihood of developing heart disease, which is a leading cause of mortality globally. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that heart disease claimed 702,880 lives in the United States in 2022. Health specialists stress that embracing specific healthy behaviors can substantially decrease the risk of cardiac issues for those living with diabetes.

Consuming excessive sodium, processed carbohydrates, and unhealthy fats is linked to an elevated heart disease risk. Cardiologist Raj Patcha advises selecting lower-sodium snack options, whole grains like whole-wheat bread and brown rice, and canned or frozen vegetables when fresh produce isn't accessible. Incorporating foods rich in healthy fats, such as avocados, fish, almond butter, and tofu, is also essential for a heart-friendly diet.

Excess weight can strain the heart, and adults should strive for at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week—such as brisk walking—or engage in 75 minutes of high-intensity workouts like running. Enjoyable forms of exercise, including dancing, gym sessions, or casual evening strolls, can also contribute to maintaining a healthy weight and overall heart wellness.

Regular monitoring of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and body weight is crucial for individuals with type 2 diabetes, according to board-certified cardiologist Cheng-Han Chen. Routine check-ups can help in identifying potential heart health issues early and ensuring prompt medical intervention.

Dr. Patcha emphasizes the necessity of having a trustworthy healthcare provider. Neglecting medical advice or feeling uneasy with your physician could result in overlooked health complications, such as heart attacks, strokes, or vision loss at a younger age. It's crucial to consider changing doctors if you feel your healthcare needs are not being met.

Various lifestyle factors contribute to an increased heart disease risk, including smoking, stress, inactivity, sleep issues, and excessive alcohol use. Engaging in discussions with your healthcare provider about these risks can facilitate practical strategies for mitigation.

Stress is known to elevate blood pressure and induce inflammation, impairing heart health. Dr. Chen recommends stress-reducing practices like yoga, meditation, and regular aerobic exercise. Even basic routines, such as deep breathing exercises or short daily walks, can yield significant benefits.

By integrating these six habits into their daily lives, individuals with type 2 diabetes can safeguard their cardiovascular health, enhance overall wellness, and diminish the likelihood of severe complications. Staying informed and making proactive lifestyle changes are vital components of living healthier with diabetes.
