Sonam Bajwa reflects on Gurpurab traditions while juggling shoots in Punjab

Sonam Bajwa reflects on Gurpurab traditions while juggling shoots in Punjab

Post by : Meena Ariff

Punjabi film star Sonam Bajwa, recognised for the Carry On Jatta films and 2023's Godday Godday Chaa, has spoken about her deep personal connection to Gurpurab, the anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth.

Although she never lived in Punjab, Sonam says the festival has been important throughout her life. Born in Uttarakhand and brought up in Uttar Pradesh where her grandparents lived, she remembers taking part in Prabhat Pheris each year.

As a child she looked forward to the day's treats and the time off school. She fondly recollects enjoying Kada Prasad, boondi and laddoos, attending prayers and feeling the joyous atmosphere that marked Guru Nanak Jayanti.

Her upbringing was shaped by her mother’s faith. Sonam notes that her mother is amritdhari and continues to perform sewa, and that she was raised within that devotional setting even if she does not recall performing sewa herself.

Warm memories of the langar also stay with her. She cites the simple pleasure of kaali daal and phulka, and how even when the same dishes are prepared at home they seem to taste different from those served on Gurpurab.

Work commitments have changed how she experiences festivals. After branching into Bollywood with films such as Baaghi 4, Housefull 5 and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat this year, Sonam often finds herself working through special occasions.

She says celebrations feel different when family is not nearby. This year she will be shooting in Punjab on Gurpurab, and remarks that spending festivals, New Year’s and birthdays on set has become part of her routine.
