South Korea Landslide Kills One as Heavy Rain Hits Southern Region

South Korea Landslide Kills One as Heavy Rain Hits Southern Region

Post by : Badri Ariffin

One person was killed and three others were injured after a landslide struck a residential apartment building in Geoje, South Gyeongsang province, as heavy rain continued across southern South Korea on Monday, August 17.

According to the Yonhap News Agency, the landslide buried the first floor of the apartment building. Rescue teams recovered three residents from the building, but one of them was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Up to 800mm of Rain Recorded

South Korea’s weather agency issued heavy rain warnings for parts of the southern region following intense rainfall that began on Saturday.

Some areas have received as much as 800 millimetres (31.5 inches) of rain, with the severe weather also bringing thunderstorms, thunder and lightning.

Flooding Disrupts Geoje

Geoje, a coastal city near Busan, has also been affected by flooding. Rivers overflowed and roads were inundated, disrupting traffic and leaving some residents stranded.

The heavy rainfall has also raised concerns about additional landslides in the area.

Residents Evacuated Amid Landslide Risk

Around 100 residents in Geoje were being evacuated because of the risk of further landslides, according to South Korea’s safety ministry.

Authorities were also carrying out rescue operations for about 20 residents who were stranded in the area.
