Based in the UAE, SpaceTech company Space42 has successfully activated its third, fourth, and fifth satellites—Foresight-3, Foresight-4, and Foresight-5—signifying a pivotal moment in the enhancement of its Earth Observation (EO) constellation.
With this latest addition, the Foresight network now comprises five Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites. This expanded system facilitates uninterrupted monitoring of the Earth, supplying high-quality geospatial data and intelligence to various governments, industries, and partners globally.
Developed in collaboration with Finland’s ICEYE, these satellites were part of a technology transfer initiative designed to bolster local capabilities while promoting a sustainable supply chain. Key integration and testing efforts took place at Space42’s Assembly, Integration and Testing (AIT) facility located in Abu Dhabi, amplifying the UAE's expertise in space technology.
Hasan Al Hosani, CEO of Smart Solutions at Space42, expressed that the deployment of Foresight-3, Foresight-4, and Foresight-5 reinforces the company’s mission to deliver sovereign Earth observation services effectively. He emphasized that the partnership with ICEYE and successful operations at the Abu Dhabi facility have significantly augmented national capabilities, allowing Space42 to compete on a global scale.
These new satellites operate in mid-inclined low Earth orbit, enhancing coverage in key regions housing over 90 percent of the global population. They supply Synthetic Aperture Radar imagery to Space42’s AI-driven geospatial intelligence platform, GIQ, which swiftly converts unrefined satellite data into actionable insights.
By utilizing complementary orbital paths, the system guarantees consistent performance during both day and night. The constellation can deliver high-resolution imagery down to 25 centimeters and operates under all weather conditions, enabling greater accuracy in detecting small-scale changes on the Earth's surface.
According to Space42, the GIQ platform assists organizations in enhancing operational efficiency by turning satellite data into actionable intelligence. The platform has shown potential in reducing emergency response times by up to 90%, lowering predictive maintenance expenses by around 30%, and alleviating operational inefficiencies by 25%.
As the global demand for Earth Observation services escalates, both governments and corporations are increasingly relying on geospatial intelligence for effective risk management, operational planning, environmental monitoring, and security measures. Industry forecasts indicate that insights from Earth Observation could yield over US$700 billion in economic value by 2030, contributing notably to emissions reduction across various sectors.
The expansion of the Foresight constellation aligns with the UAE’s National Space Strategy 2030, reflecting the country’s ambition to emerge as a premier provider of sophisticated Earth Observation capabilities. By investing in sovereign space infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and local manufacturing, the UAE is solidifying its stance within the burgeoning global space industry.
