Tragic Blaze at Unregistered Nursing Home in Sri Lanka Claims 12 Lives

Tragic Blaze at Unregistered Nursing Home in Sri Lanka Claims 12 Lives

Post by : Badri Ariffin

A tragic fire erupted at an unregistered nursing home in western Sri Lanka, resulting in the deaths of 12 residents and injuries to eight others, as reported by local authorities.

The incident occurred late Wednesday in Anguruwatota, where emergency services successfully rescued 51 residents trapped inside. Police spokesman Fredrick Wootler noted that the home was also accommodating individuals with mental health issues.

In the aftermath, the nursing home’s director was taken into custody on charges of negligence leading to fatalities. A court has ordered a week’s detention for the director while investigations unfold.

Footage from the site revealed extensive damage, with much of the facility's furniture reduced to ash. Firefighters, police, and local community members collaborated to extinguish the flames and assist those entrapped.

The rescued residents were helped by police and military personnel and relocated by bus to a secure area.

Chathura Mihudum, head of the National Secretariat for Elders, disclosed that the nursing home operated without legal registration. He reiterated that authorities had previously issued warnings regarding the need for compliance with health regulations.

Mihudum further revealed that the facility was overcrowded, housing 71 individuals in a space intended for nearly 15. Government inspections had already prompted the management to adhere to wellness standards.

An investigation is ongoing to uncover the fire's cause and to consider any additional legal actions.
