Syria and Israel Engage in US-Supported Discussions in Jordan to Mitigate Tensions

Syria and Israel Engage in US-Supported Discussions in Jordan to Mitigate Tensions

Post by : Saif Rahman

As part of US-led initiatives to ease regional tensions, Syria and Israel have conducted high-level discussions in Jordan, following an Israeli strike on a Syrian military position near the Turkish frontier.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani reportedly met with an Israeli delegation during these talks, as confirmed by Syrian state media, with the United States mediating the session.

These discussions arrive at a critical juncture, with increased hostilities observed between Israel, Syria, and Türkiye due to recent military incidents within Syrian territory.

Focus on Security Protocols

According to reports from Syrian state media, the efficiency of preventing Israeli assaults, detentions, and military actions within Syria was a primary focus of the discussions.

Moreover, officials discussed the revival of negotiations geared towards establishing a stable long-term security pact between Israel and Syria.

A significant concern was the mounting tension between Israel and Türkiye, with both nations discussing methods to mitigate escalating conflicts within Syrian borders.

Leadership of the Israeli Delegation

Reports from AFP indicate that al-Shaibani met with Roman Gofman, head of the Mossad intelligence agency, indicative of the talks' significance as the US persists in forging a security arrangement.

This initiative reflects the US's ongoing mission to negotiate an agreement between Israel and the administration of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

Israeli Military Actions in Syrian Territory

Since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Israel has executed numerous strikes across Syria.

Additionally, Israeli forces have encroached into a UN-patrolled buffer zone that had historically separated Israeli and Syrian military assets near the Golan Heights.

Israel contends that its military actions target security threats and aim to prevent hostile forces from taking root close to its borders.

Recent Strike on Abu Duhur Airbase Heightens Tensions

Israel's recent assault on the Abu Duhur airbase located in northwestern Idlib was reported to disrupt Turkish deployments at the site, an assertion rejected by both Syria and Türkiye.

This episode intensifies an already intricate regional landscape that includes pivotal dynamics among Israel, Syria, Türkiye, and the United States.

Warnings Exchanged Between Israel and Türkiye

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have issued increasingly sharp responses in light of the incident.

Türkiye opposes Israeli military engagements in Syria, while Israel remains wary of Turkish involvement and influence within its borders.

Washington is now striving to avert an escalation into a broader regional crisis.

Persistent Obstacles to Diplomacy

The current negotiations illustrate an effort to maintain diplomatic pathways despite ongoing conflicts and military operations.

Syria seeks a cessation of Israeli attacks and operations on its soil, whereas Israel demands security assurances and strategies to stave off threats near its territory.

While the discussions' potential for yielding a lasting security arrangement remains uncertain, US-backed dialogues may pave the way for renewed diplomacy between Syria and Israel.
