Tesla is guiding India towards a sustainable electric future with a bold initiative designed to broaden its footprint throughout the nation. Following its entry into India earlier this year, the company celebrated its 50th global market, setting sights on building a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.
Central to the plan is improved convenience and accessibility. Tesla intends to roll out a network of charging stations in all major urban centers, positioned near shopping malls, hotels, workplaces, and lifestyle destinations. As explained by Sharad Agarwal, Tesla India General Manager, this infrastructure will align with customers' daily lives, simplifying EV ownership.
Since launching two imported variants of the Model Y, Tesla has focused on home charging solutions, destination chargers at strategic locations, and superchargers in populous areas. Deliveries commenced in September 2025, with a total of 109 units sold to date. Current high import duties, around 70%, have driven the Model Y's price to ₹59.89 lakh and ₹67.89 lakh, approximately 30% higher than in the U.S.
Tesla's presence in India is steadily growing. The first experience center was inaugurated in Mumbai in July, followed by a second in Delhi in August. A new unit in Gurugram will increase the network to four charging stations across the country, which will feature 16 superchargers and 10 destination chargers.
While local manufacturing remains off the agenda, Tesla is focusing on imported vehicles and related service infrastructure, simultaneously building awareness around EV adoption. This initiative resonates with India’s environmental objectives as cities like Delhi and Mumbai combat significant pollution issues. Increasing EV use is viewed as a vital measure to reduce emissions and enhance urban air quality.
With a structured approach to expansion, Tesla is balancing market entry with infrastructure enhancement and lifestyle-driven innovation. By providing convenient charging options and premium EVs, the company aims to be a driving force for sustainable urban transportation in India.
