Thailand and Peru have moved closer toward finalizing a Free Trade Agreement after high-level discussions between Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Peruvian Ambassador Cecilia Zunilda Galarreta Bazán in Bangkok.
The meeting took place during the ambassador’s farewell visit following the completion of her diplomatic term in Thailand. Both sides highlighted the strong friendship and cooperation that Thailand and Peru have shared over the past 60 years.
According to officials, the two countries welcomed the progress made in negotiations for the Thailand-Peru Free Trade Agreement and expressed hope that the deal could be officially signed within this year. Leaders from both nations believe the agreement could significantly strengthen trade and investment opportunities.
Food security and agricultural cooperation were also important topics during the discussion. Both countries acknowledged their strong agricultural potential and agreed there are major opportunities to expand food trade and cooperation in the future.
Prime Minister Anutin stated that Thailand is ready to strengthen its role as a food supply hub for Peru and other South American markets. Officials believe closer agricultural ties could improve long-term economic cooperation between the regions.
The Peruvian ambassador also discussed the Chancay Port project, which is expected to improve logistics connectivity and supply chain links between South America and ASEAN countries. Thailand could play an important role as a gateway for trade within the ASEAN region.
Both sides agreed that improved logistics infrastructure and stronger trade links would benefit businesses and economic growth in both regions. The discussions also reflected increasing interest in deeper cooperation between ASEAN and Latin American economies.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Prime Minister thanked the ambassador for her contribution to strengthening bilateral relations and wished her success in her future diplomatic work while reaffirming Thailand’s friendship with Peru.
