Thailand's Deputy Defence Minister Warns Cambodia Over Border Incident

Thailand's Deputy Defence Minister Warns Cambodia Over Border Incident

Post by : Meena Ariff

In a major development concerning Thailand’s national security and border management, Deputy Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit has issued a firm warning to Cambodia. This warning comes after an incident in which Cambodian villagers removed barbed wire that had been installed along the Thai-Cambodian border at Ban Nong Chan village in Sa Kaeo province, Thailand. General Natthaphon made it clear that such actions are completely unacceptable and warned that they could result in legal consequences.

The incident has drawn attention to the delicate situation along the Thai-Cambodian border, which has been a subject of longstanding discussions and occasional disputes. Thai authorities have emphasized that protecting national sovereignty and the safety of border communities is their top priority.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred on Monday when a group of Cambodian villagers dismantled wire barriers at Ban Nong Chan village. These barriers were originally installed by the First Army Area and the Burapha Task Force as a precautionary measure to protect Thai communities near the border. The barbed wire was meant to prevent potential disturbances and maintain order, particularly ahead of the planned visit by the Sa Kaeo provincial governor, who was scheduled to meet with local residents in the area.

The removal of the wire by Cambodian villagers created immediate concerns for border security. Officials noted that such actions could encourage further encroachment or illegal activities if left unchecked. Local authorities have since been monitoring the situation closely to ensure that there are no further disruptions.

Government’s Response

Speaking at Government House in Bangkok, General Natthaphon described the villagers’ action as a violation of Thai sovereignty. He explained that dismantling government-installed barriers constitutes the destruction of government property under the Criminal Code, and he called for strict legal measures to address the situation.

General Natthaphon also confirmed that he had instructed the Foreign Ministry to lodge a formal protest with Cambodia. He emphasized that the incident occurred on Thai sovereign territory and should be treated as a serious matter requiring immediate attention.

According to the Deputy Defence Minister, the Thai government is fully committed to preventing such incidents in the future and will act decisively to protect its borders. He stressed that sovereignty cannot be compromised under any circumstances.

Military Preparedness

In response to the incident, the First Army Area had already deployed a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), a tool used to control crowds and maintain order. General Natthaphon mentioned that additional reinforcements could be sent to the area if necessary. He also noted that police officers are often more suitable for handling situations involving civilians because their presence appears less intimidating and helps avoid unnecessary tensions.

Furthermore, General Natthaphon accused Cambodian forces of supporting the villagers during the incident, stating that their presence made it clear that the action was coordinated. A formal protest note has already been sent to Cambodian authorities, and the issue will be discussed during the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting scheduled for early September.

Future Measures

General Natthaphon stressed that Thailand will not wait for the GBC meeting to act if its sovereignty is threatened. He explained that the Defence Ministry’s rules of engagement allow commanders at border posts to take immediate action to protect national territory.

Regarding potential evacuations of local residents, he stated that the Interior Ministry has already set up evacuation centers in Surin province as a precautionary measure. These centers are ready to accommodate people living near the border in case the situation escalates.

The Deputy Defence Minister also addressed concerns raised by the Cambodian governor of Banteay Meanchey, who questioned Thai land titling procedures in the border region. General Natthaphon clarified that land rights issuance is the responsibility of the Interior Ministry, while matters of sovereignty and security fall strictly under the Defence Ministry. He emphasized that these responsibilities are separate and that Thailand will never compromise on issues of national security.

Background and Context

The Thai-Cambodian border has historically been sensitive, with disputes arising over land boundaries and resource management. While both nations have generally maintained peaceful relations, incidents like the dismantling of border barriers highlight the ongoing challenges of managing shared boundaries.

Thailand has invested in infrastructure and security measures along the border to ensure the safety of its citizens and prevent illegal activities. Barbed wire installations, patrols, and monitoring systems are part of these measures. The government has repeatedly stated that protecting the integrity of its borders is essential for national security and the well-being of local communities.

Cambodia, on the other hand, has occasionally raised concerns over land use and border administration. While both countries maintain diplomatic channels to address these concerns, incidents on the ground sometimes escalate tensions and require immediate government action.

The recent border incident at Ban Nong Chan village underscores the importance of clear communication, legal enforcement, and strong security measures along the Thai-Cambodian border. Thailand’s firm response demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty, protecting local communities, and maintaining peace and stability in the border regions.

Moving forward, both Thailand and Cambodia will need to carefully navigate this sensitive issue to prevent further misunderstandings or escalations. The Thai government has made it clear that any violation of its territorial integrity will be met with a swift response, reflecting its ongoing commitment to national security and the protection of its citizens.
