To Lam, Singapore Speaker Boost Ties Further

Post by : Shakul

Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam met Singapore Parliament Speaker Seah Kian Peng on May 30 during his State visit to Singapore, reaffirming the growing strength of bilateral relations and exploring new opportunities for cooperation between the two nations.

Speaker Seah Kian Peng warmly welcomed President To Lam, his wife, and the high-level Vietnamese delegation. He praised Vietnam’s increasing role in regional and international affairs and congratulated To Lam on his re-election as General Secretary and his election as President of Vietnam. The Speaker also commended To Lam’s keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, describing it as a reflection of shared regional aspirations and common strategic interests.

During the meeting, both leaders highlighted the remarkable progress achieved since Vietnam and Singapore upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2025. They noted that cooperation has expanded rapidly across political, economic, technological, and people-to-people sectors, demonstrating the depth of trust between the two countries.

President To Lam emphasized that political confidence between the two nations remains strong while trade, investment, and connectivity continue to expand. He pointed to the 23 Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP) as a successful symbol of bilateral economic cooperation and a model for regional development partnerships.

The two sides also discussed collaboration in emerging sectors that are shaping the future economy. Areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, clean energy, carbon credit exchanges, innovation, financial centers, and supply chain resilience were identified as key priorities for future cooperation. Both leaders agreed that these sectors offer significant opportunities to strengthen economic competitiveness and regional stability.

President To Lam praised the positive role played by the legislative bodies of both countries in supporting the implementation of bilateral agreements and creating a favorable legal environment for cooperation. He proposed increased exchanges between parliamentarians, including young legislators, women lawmakers, and parliamentary committees, to deepen understanding and share governance experiences.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening parliamentary cooperation and supporting ASEAN’s future development. Speaker Seah Kian Peng expressed hope that Vietnam would actively support Singapore’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027, while both leaders reaffirmed their determination to contribute to a stronger, more united, and resilient Southeast Asian region.
