Paige Greco, an Australian Paralympic champion, has tragically passed away at the young age of 28. Known for her exceptional achievements in para-cycling, Greco secured Australia's first gold medal during the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Her sudden demise occurred at her home in Adelaide due to a medical episode, as reported by AusCycling, the governing body for cycling in Australia.
In a heartfelt statement, Greco's family expressed profound grief, celebrating her accomplishments and vibrant spirit. Her mother, Natalie Greco, shared, “Paige was our everything. Her warmth, kindness, and tenacity impacted our lives every day. While we are heartbroken, we are incredibly proud of who she was and how fiercely she represented Australia.”
Born with cerebral palsy, Paige initially explored track-and-field before transitioning to cycling in 2018. Her unwavering dedication and talent rapidly earned her a prominent place on the global stage, leading to multiple World Championship and World Cup titles in para-cycling.
At the Tokyo 2020 Games, Greco made history by setting a world record in the women's C1–3 3,000m individual pursuit. Alongside her gold medal, she showcased her versatility by winning bronze medals in both the C1-3 road race and time trial events.
Though her health prevented her from competing in the selection rounds for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, she returned to elite competition in 2025 and earned another bronze at the Para-cycling World Championships in Belgium in the C3 road race.
Tributes from Australia’s sports community flowed in following her passing. Marne Fechner, CEO of AusCycling, hailed Greco as “an extraordinary athlete with remarkable achievements at the highest levels.” He noted her positive spirit and courageous outlook as her defining traits.
Cameron Murray, CEO of Paralympics Australia, praised Greco’s exceptionally uplifting nature, stating, “Her achievements were impressive, but it was her kindness and quiet determination that impacted those around her. She had a unique ability to foster inclusivity and support, leaving a lasting impression on many.”
Greco's journey inspired countless Australians and athletes globally. Her dedication and success in para-cycling will be cherished, and her compassion, humility, and encouragement made her a cherished figure within her community and beyond.
Paige Greco’s passing represents a monumental loss for Australia and the para-sport community. She will be fondly remembered not just for her accolades but for the kindness and courage that defined her life. Her inspiring legacy will continue to impact future generations of athletes.
