Trump Celebrates Icons at Kennedy Center Honors

Trump Celebrates Icons at Kennedy Center Honors

Post by : Meena Ariff

President Donald Trump took center stage at the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, honoring Sylvester Stallone, Kiss, Gloria Gaynor, Michael Crawford, and George Strait, whom he described as “legendary in many respects.” As the first sitting president to participate, he acknowledged the joy their contributions have brought billions, labeling them “some of the greatest artists and performers in history.”

Under Trump’s leadership, the Kennedy Center has become a key aspect of his cultural initiatives, transforming its board and securing over $250 million for improvements. He lightheartedly suggested the center could be renamed to the “Trump Kennedy Center.” Throughout the event, he made multiple appearances, applauding the honorees with both live and recorded segments, and jesting with the audience.

The honorees encompass a wide array of American culture: Stallone for his iconic roles in “Rocky” and “Rambo”, Gaynor for “I Will Survive”, Kiss for their theatrical and explosive performances, Strait as a symbol of country music, and Crawford as a Broadway star with a Tony Award. Trump noted that persistence was a common thread connecting both the artists and the audience.

This event featured heartfelt tributes, especially for Kiss, who remembered their late guitarist Ace Frehley with a solitary red guitar that produced smoke. The night concluded with Cheap Trick delivering an energetic performance of “Rock and Roll All Nite.”

The honorees showed deep appreciation, with Stallone likening the recognition to “standing in the eye of a hurricane”, Crawford reflecting on its humbling nature at the career’s end, and Gaynor calling it “a dream come true.”

Trump played an active part in selecting the 2025 honorees, narrowing down over 50 nominees to these five. While some, like Stallone, have been supporters, others hold varied political views but are emphasizing unity following Trump’s 2024 win.

The airing of the Kennedy Center Honors is anticipated to attract a sizable audience, with Trump foreseeing record-breaking ratings for the broadcast.
