South Korea welcomed former U.S. President Donald Trump with a show of ceremony and symbolism on Wednesday, presenting him with the “Grand Order of Mugunghwa” — the nation’s highest honor — and a golden crown replica from the ancient Silla kingdom.
Trump landed in Seoul on the last stop of his Asia tour, which included Malaysia and Japan. His visit focuses on strengthening trade relations and revisiting peace efforts in the Korean Peninsula.
In a striking scene, South Korean and U.S. fighter jets escorted Air Force One, while a military band played “YMCA” as Trump stepped onto the tarmac to a gun salute. President Lee Jae Myung, who hosted the event, said the honor recognizes Trump’s role as a “peacemaker” and his previous diplomatic outreach to North Korea.
The gift of the gold crown — modeled after the 5th-century Cheonmachong artifact — represents unity and stability. The original crown, discovered in Gyeongju, is considered one of Korea’s most prized national treasures.
Trump and Lee are expected to discuss U.S. tariffs and new trade concessions over a working lunch featuring both Korean specialties and an American-style salad inspired by Trump’s New York roots.
The visit will conclude with a dinner joined by several Asia-Pacific leaders, including those from Vietnam, Australia, and Singapore, who adjusted their schedules to meet Trump before the official APEC leaders’ summit later this week.
