US President Donald Trump highlighted his economic achievements during his State of the Union address, calling the current period a “golden age” for the United States. The speech came at a critical time as his approval ratings remain low and midterm elections approach.
Trump said his administration had reduced inflation, pushed stock markets to record highs, passed major tax cuts, and lowered prescription drug prices. He claimed the country is now stronger, richer, and more successful than ever.
Despite his claims, recent economic data showed slower growth and rising inflation. Polls indicate that only a minority of Americans approve of his handling of the economy, with many still concerned about the high cost of living, including food, housing, and insurance.
During the address, Trump remained largely disciplined and followed his prepared remarks. He avoided direct criticism of the Supreme Court despite a recent ruling that struck down his tariff policy, calling the decision “unfortunate.”
Tensions rose when Trump turned to immigration, repeating claims that undocumented migrants were responsible for increased crime. Democrats strongly objected, with several lawmakers protesting inside the chamber while others skipped the speech entirely.
Trump also accused Democrats of opposing voter identification laws to gain political advantage. Democrats countered that such laws could suppress voter participation.
The speech ended on a celebratory note as Trump praised national achievements and honored the US men’s ice hockey team for winning a gold medal at the Winter Olympics.
