UAE's ‘PROXIMITIES’ Art Exhibition Launches in Seoul

UAE's ‘PROXIMITIES’ Art Exhibition Launches in Seoul

Post by : Maya Rahman

The exhibition ‘PROXIMITIES’ was inaugurated by Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, Minister of Culture, in Seoul, South Korea, showcasing contemporary art from the UAE. This initiative, organized by the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) in collaboration with the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), marks the first display of Emirati art in both South Korea and East Asia. Running until 29th March 2026, this exhibition is part of a sustained cultural partnership aimed at fostering artistic dialogue and exchange between the two countries.

The launch attracted notable attendees, such as Kim Hea Kyung, the First Lady of South Korea; Chae Hwi-young, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, ADMAF founder; Abdulla Saif Ali Slayem AlNuaimi, UAE Ambassador to South Korea; Choi Eun-ju, SeMA's Director-General; and Kim Tae-kyun, First Deputy Mayor of Seoul. Their presence underscores the significance of cultural collaboration between the UAE and South Korea.

With around 110 artworks showcased, this is South Korea's largest exhibition dedicated to contemporary Emirati art, featuring contributions from 47 artists spanning three generations. These artworks reflect the evolution of Emirati art since the 1980s, capturing the creative themes explored by artists over the years.

The exhibition presents works by a diverse array of pioneering, contemporary, and emerging Emirati artists. These pieces delve into universal human themes such as identity, memory, time, the body, nature, and social relationships, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich artistic narratives that define the UAE's visual arts landscape.

Continuing a partnership that began in 2024, ‘PROXIMITIES’ aims to establish a robust framework for international cultural cooperation, championing Emirati art on the global stage and fostering dialogue among artists, curators, and audiences across varying cultures.

This exhibition not only showcases the dynamic art scene of the UAE but also bolsters cultural understanding and exchange with South Korea, providing audiences a unique opportunity to engage with contemporary Emirati creativity.
