Ukraine is quickly making new drones that can stop enemy drones from flying into its cities. These special drones, called interceptor drones, are being built to fight off a large number of Russian drones, especially the Shahid drones, which come in big groups at night.
President Zelensky said on Friday that Ukrainian companies are working hard to build these interceptor drones, and production is growing fast. These drones are needed because Russian forces have been sending over 400 drones in one night, sometimes even more than 470. In one attack this week, 440 drones and 32 missiles hit Kyiv, destroying part of an apartment building and sadly killing 28 people.
A spokesperson from Ukraine's Air Force said they can't keep using expensive anti-aircraft missiles or planes every time to stop drones. That’s why they’re trying to find cheaper and smarter ways, like using drones to stop drones.
Before the war started in February 2022, Ukraine didn’t make many drones. Now, they are making a lot more and plan to make up to 4 million drones a year. These drones are not just for defense. Ukraine is also using them to target military and industrial places inside Russia. Last month, Ukrainian drones even hit Russian bomber planes at different airfields.
Ukraine believes that making its own drones is an important part of staying safe and winning the war.
