Aonishiki Makes History with Emperor’s Cup Victory in Japan

Aonishiki Makes History with Emperor’s Cup Victory in Japan

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Danylo Yavhusishyn, known in the sumo world as Aonishiki, has etched his name in history by clinching the Emperor’s Cup at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament held in Fukuoka, Japan, this past Sunday. At merely 21 years of age, Aonishiki became the pioneer Ukrainian to seize victory in a premier sumo event, prevailing against Mongolian yokozuna Hoshoryu in a riveting final.

This remarkable achievement pushes Aonishiki closer to a rank elevation from sekiwake to ozeki, the prestigious second-highest rank. Yet, he maintains a grounded approach, prioritizing enjoyment over promotion thoughts following his first major tournament triumph. Engaging in the customary sumo practice of lifting a sea bream—a symbol of good fortune—he described the experience as unique and exhilarating.

Hailing from Vinnytsia, Ukraine, Aonishiki began his sumo journey at seven and by 17 was crowned the national champion. After fleeing to Germany with his parents due to the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he relocated to Japan in April 2022 to chase his sumo aspirations.

Post-victory, Aonishiki shared the news with his parents back in Germany, expressing heartfelt thanks. He remarked, "It’s all thanks to you," noting that his mother wept with joy while his father's silent pride was palpable. Friends and fellow Ukrainians have also reached out with messages of congratulations.

He also conveyed his happiness at being able to honor his stablemaster's support and training. Following festivities after the tournament, Aonishiki is now set to prepare for future challenges.

This significant victory not only exemplifies Aonishiki’s dedication but also shines a light on Ukraine’s presence in the sumo wrestling arena.
