Sunil Grover's Journey Through Depression Before Gaining Fame

Sunil Grover's Journey Through Depression Before Gaining Fame

Post by : Meena Ariff

Popular comedian Sunil Grover, well-known for his role in The Kapil Sharma Show, encountered substantial personal and professional hurdles prior to his breakout in 2013. In a recent interview, fellow cast member Upasana Singh, who portrayed 'Bua' on the show, revealed the challenging phase Grover faced when he battled depression and was nearly dismissed from the program.

Sunil Grover's Struggles with Depression

According to Upasana Singh, at the time Kapil Sharma's show launched, Grover was experiencing a difficult moment. “When Kapil's show started, he wasn’t well. I noticed something was wrong and he told me he had been hospitalized due to depression. He wasn’t getting much work either,” she stated.

She commended Grover's remarkable transformation. “When he visited my house with Kapil, I hardly recognized him since he was not active back then. However, he eventually excelled and we became good friends,” she added, acknowledging his talent and resilience.

Threat of Dismissal for Sunil Grover

Upasana also shared about concerns from creative executives regarding Grover's performance. “Initially, he spoke slowly, which made the team consider firing him as they doubted he could keep pace with other cast members,” she explained.

She defended Grover, asserting that he was a skilled actor who deserved the chance to find his rhythm. “I insisted that he was very good and they should retain him. I’m grateful they listened, especially considering his success today,” Upasana remarked.

The Fallout Between Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma

Sunil Grover and Kapil Sharma collaborated on numerous successful comedy productions like Comedy Nights With Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show. However, in 2017, tensions rose following an alleged incident during a flight from Melbourne, leading to Grover's departure from the show.

Kapil later acknowledged there were issues but contended that media portrayals were blown out of proportion. “It was reported that I threw a shoe at Sunil or acted out. Those stories were greatly exaggerated,” he stated.

Public Apologies and Their Reunion

After the incident, Kapil extended a public apology on X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“Paji Sunil Grover, I apologize if I unintentionally hurt you. You know how much I care for you. I’m also upset. Always sending love and regards :)”

Sunil replied with a gracious yet pointed message:

“Bha ji! Yes, you hurt me deeply. Working with you has been very enlightening. Just one suggestion — respect human beings too, not just animals… appreciate their existence.”

Years later, the duo reunited for The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, a moment cherished by fans who longed to see them collaborate again.

Despite facing adversity, Sunil Grover's journey remains an inspiring testament to persistence and talent triumphing in the entertainment field.
