US-Kurd Talks Raise Concerns in Syria Amid Iran Conflict Escalation

US-Kurd Talks Raise Concerns in Syria Amid Iran Conflict Escalation

Post by : Shakul

Damascus/Northeast Syria — Reports that the United States is engaging with Kurdish groups amid escalating tensions with Iran have raised fresh concerns in Syria. Kurdish-led forces already control parts of northeast Syria, and any expansion of US support to Kurdish factions could directly impact the country’s fragile security balance. Analysts warn that developments linked to Iran could spill over into Syrian territory.

In Syria, Kurdish forces—particularly the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the YPG—have previously partnered with the United States in the fight against ISIS. However, Türkiye considers the YPG linked to the PKK and has conducted military operations in northern Syria in response. Any renewed or expanded US-Kurdish cooperation could therefore heighten tensions between Washington and Ankara, further complicating Syria’s already delicate situation.

Experts caution that using Kurdish groups as part of a broader strategy against Iran may deepen instability inside Syria. The country continues to face economic hardship, unresolved political divisions, and ongoing security threats. Additional regional rivalries triggered by US-Iran tensions risk adding another layer of uncertainty to Syria’s recovery and long-term stability.
