Kerala Chief Minister-designate V.D. Satheesan has started discussions on forming the new state government after the Congress leadership officially selected him for the top post. Political activity intensified in Thiruvananthapuram on May 15, 2026, as senior leaders of the United Democratic Front gathered to discuss the structure of the upcoming Cabinet and alliance representation.
As part of the ongoing consultations, V.D. Satheesan met former Chief Minister and current Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram. The meeting attracted major political attention as Kerala prepares for a new phase of governance following the Assembly election results announced earlier this month.
The Congress party had faced nearly ten days of uncertainty after the election results before the All India Congress Committee officially announced Satheesan as the Chief Ministerial choice on May 14. The decision ended intense internal discussions among senior party leaders competing for the leadership position.
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, who was also considered a strong contender for the Chief Minister post, publicly extended his support to Satheesan. Congress leaders described the move as a positive step toward maintaining unity within the party and strengthening the UDF alliance before government formation.
UDF leaders held important discussions regarding Cabinet positions and possible representation for alliance partners. Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader Anoop Jacob stated that UDF allies expect fair representation in the Cabinet and discussions on ministerial positions would continue during leadership meetings.
Several Congress leaders praised Satheesan’s leadership abilities and expressed confidence in his future administration. Senior leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan stated that Satheesan has the vision, strength and competence required to serve as a strong Chief Minister for Kerala.
Speaking to the media, Satheesan also stressed the importance of protecting Kerala’s secular identity. He said the Assembly election result reflected the people’s support for secular values and warned against attempts to spread hatred and division within the state.
The Chief Minister-designate further stated that his government would focus on addressing the rising cost of living and economic pressures caused by increasing fuel prices linked to tensions in West Asia. He assured that the new administration would work to reduce the financial burden on ordinary people and improve public welfare across Kerala.
The UDF leadership is expected to finalize the broad structure of the Cabinet soon as the alliance prepares to formally assume office and begin a new political chapter in Kerala.
