French golfer Victor Perez has made a pivotal career choice by leaving the PGA Tour to join the LIV Golf league, becoming the first golfer in 2023 to make such a move. The announcement was made on Tuesday, generating significant buzz in the golf community.
Perez will represent the Cleeks team, captained by Martin Kaymer, alongside other notable players like Poland's Adrian Meronk and veteran Richard Bland. Expressing his enthusiasm, Perez believes this new chapter is crucial for his professional journey.
A respected golfer, Perez has won three titles on the European Tour and held memberships in both the PGA and European Tours. Throughout 2025, he primarily participated in PGA Tour events, with his highest rank being a tie for ninth at the RBC Canadian Open. However, he faced challenges in maintaining competitiveness this season.
Currently sitting at No. 108 in the FedEx Cup standings, Perez's stability on the PGA Tour was precarious, prompting his withdrawal from the RSM Classic just before this major announcement.
In his own words, Perez described LIV Golf as “golf’s next great chapter,” excited to join a team that embraces innovation in the sport. He aims to elevate his performance and inject new energy into his game.
The LIV Golf league offers its players guaranteed contracts, lucrative prize money, and a team-centric format that has attracted significant interest from golfers seeking financial security and an alternative competitive landscape.
This shift in Perez's career could also help him regain his confidence following a difficult season on the PGA Tour.
Taking over for Frederik Kjettrup on the Cleeks, who was released following an unsatisfactory points finish, Perez brings a wealth of experience from both the PGA and European Tours, which may enhance the team's performance as a whole.
Perez's exit from the PGA Tour underscores the evolving landscape of professional golf, as LIV Golf steadily draws a diverse array of players. While some golfers remain committed to traditional circuits, many view LIV Golf as a chance for fresh beginnings.
As the 2026 season looms, fans are keenly awaiting Perez’s performance in his new role and the influence of his switch on both tours.
