Fattah-2: Iran’s Mach 15 Hypersonic Missile Challenges Modern Air Defenses

Post by : Shakul

Iran’s advanced hypersonic missile, the Fattah‑2, is gaining attention as a powerful new weapon in the ongoing Middle East conflict, according to Iranian state media and defence analysts. The missile, developed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), represents an evolution of Iran’s existing hypersonic weapons program and is touted to travel at extreme speeds — reportedly up to Mach 15 — with a potential range of roughly 1,400–1,500 km.

The Fattah‑2 was unveiled as a next‑generation hypersonic missile designed to manoeuvre in flight, making it more challenging for traditional air defence systems to track and intercept. Iran’s official statements describe the missile as capable of penetrating sophisticated defence shields and striking strategic targets across the region if employed.

Recently released footage by Iranian media outlets purportedly shows the Fattah‑2 being launched during Operation True Promise 4, part of Tehran’s declared retaliatory actions following U.S.‑Israeli strikes on Iranian facilities. While the video and specific operational use details have not been independently verified, the clips have circulated widely on social media and regional news outlets.

Hypersonic missiles like the Fattah‑2 fly at speeds far exceeding conventional ballistic weapons and can alter their flight path mid‑course, complicating interception efforts by existing defence systems. Analysts note that such capabilities could significantly affect military balances and raise concerns among global powers monitoring the conflict.

Critics and some Western analysts remain cautious, pointing out that while Iran claims impressive performance for the Fattah‑2, independent confirmation of the missile’s operational capabilities is limited. Nonetheless, the Fattah‑2’s emergence highlights Iran’s ongoing efforts to advance its strategic weapons technology amid growing regional tensions.
