The 18th edition of the India-Mongolia Military Exercise Nomadic Elephant 2026 is underway at the Foreign Training Node in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. The annual platoon-level exercise began on September 21 and is scheduled to continue until October 3, bringing together personnel from the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces. According to the Ministry of Defence, both countries have deployed 45 personnel each for the exercise. The training is designed to provide troops from the two forces with an opportunity to work together, exchange operational practices and improve coordination during realistic field situations.
A major focus of Nomadic Elephant 2026 is improving the ability of both forces to conduct counter-insurgency operations in mountainous and semi-urban environments under a United Nations mandate. The training includes tactical-level activities intended to improve operational coordination and familiarity between the participating contingents. Soldiers are being exposed to procedures and drills that require close communication, disciplined movement and coordinated action in difficult terrain. The exercise also provides an opportunity for the two sides to exchange their experience and understand each other's operational methods.
The training programme covers several modern military capabilities alongside conventional field exercises. These include cordon and search operations, room intervention drills, special heliborne operations and cyber security training. The use of drones and counter-drone systems is another important part of the exercise. Such training allows personnel to understand how unmanned systems can be incorporated into operational environments while also preparing troops to respond to potential drone-related threats. The exercise therefore combines conventional tactical training with technology-focused activities, giving participating soldiers exposure to a wider range of operational situations.
During the ongoing exercise, Mongolian personnel have taken part in small-arms handling and firing sessions. The training includes weapon familiarisation, safety procedures, loading and unloading, aiming and firing practices. The Indian Army has also demonstrated room intervention drills designed for operations in built-up areas. These drills focus on systematic entry, room clearance, coordinated movement, communication, fire discipline and casualty evacuation. Joint participation in these activities allows soldiers from both countries to observe and practise operational procedures together, helping them understand how the other force approaches tactical situations.
The exercise is not limited to battlefield training. It also provides opportunities for cultural interaction between Indian and Mongolian personnel. Mongolian troops demonstrated their traditional wrestling style, known as Bökh, along with unarmed combat techniques. The presentation gave Indian personnel an opportunity to learn about Mongolia's martial traditions while creating an informal setting for interaction between the two contingents. Such activities are being conducted alongside professional military training and contribute to broader interaction and mutual understanding between the participating personnel.
The Military Exercise reflects the longstanding defence relationship between India and Mongolia. Nomadic Elephant is conducted alternately in the two countries, allowing both armed forces to regularly train together. The previous edition was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in May and June 2025. The 2026 edition in Pithoragarh continues this annual training arrangement. Through tactical drills, operational exchanges and joint activities, the exercise is intended to improve interoperability and strengthen the ability of both forces to coordinate in realistic operational environments.
The exercise comes at a time when military forces increasingly need to prepare for operations that combine traditional field challenges with emerging technologies. Mountainous terrain presents unique operational difficulties, while semi-urban environments require specialised movement, communication and coordination. The inclusion of cyber security, drones and counter-drone systems adds another layer to the training. For the Indian and Mongolian forces, the exercise provides a structured platform to practise together, exchange operational knowledge and build familiarity at the tactical level.
Nomadic Elephant 2026 is the 18th India-Mongolia joint military exercise. It is an annual platoon-level exercise conducted alternately by India and Mongolia.
The 2026 edition is being conducted at the Foreign Training Node in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.
