Vietnam Honors 80 Soldiers Returned From Laos

Vietnam Honors 80 Soldiers Returned From Laos

Post by : Shakul

Vietnam held a solemn memorial and burial ceremony in Nghe An province to honor 80 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts whose remains were returned from Laos after decades. The emotional ceremony reflected the nation’s deep respect and gratitude toward those who sacrificed their lives during wartime missions in Laos.

The ceremony took place at the Nghi Loc Martyrs’ Cemetery and was attended by senior Vietnamese leaders, military officials, provincial authorities and local residents. Deputy Prime Minister Pham Thi Thanh Tra led the tribute and offered incense in memory of the fallen soldiers who dedicated their lives to national liberation and international solidarity.

Authorities said the recovery mission was part of a long-running cooperation programme between Vietnam and Laos aimed at locating and repatriating the remains of Vietnamese soldiers who died while supporting the Lao revolution during years of conflict. The effort highlights the strong historic relationship between the two neighbouring countries.

During the 2025-2026 dry season, the search and recovery team under the Nghe An Provincial Military Command successfully recovered all 80 remains assigned under the mission. Officials confirmed that although the identities of the remains have not yet been determined, the recovery operation achieved its full target.

Vietnamese officials praised the sacrifices made by volunteer soldiers and experts who fought alongside the Lao people during difficult wartime periods. Leaders said the heroic contributions of these soldiers helped strengthen the special friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos.

Authorities also expressed gratitude to the Lao government and local communities for their support over many decades in preserving gravesites and assisting search teams in difficult mountainous areas. The cooperation between both countries has led to the recovery of thousands of remains over the past four decades.

According to officials, nearly 12,900 remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts have been recovered from Laos so far, with hundreds identified and returned to their hometowns. The effort continues to provide emotional closure for families who waited decades for news of their loved ones.

The burial ceremony concluded in an atmosphere of deep emotion as delegates, soldiers and citizens laid flowers and incense at the graves. The return of the fallen heroes during the historic month of May served as a powerful reminder of sacrifice, patriotism and the enduring bond between Vietnam and Laos.
